A resolution was adopted during the 25th Congress of the Communist Party of India (CPI) held in Chandigarh on Monday, which strongly condemned what it termed as Israel’s genocidal actions in Gaza. The resolution called for an immediate ceasefire and urged India to refrain from complicity in the violence.
The resolution, presented by Rajya Sabha MP P. Sandosh Kumar, reiterated CPI’s historic support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders. The CPI characterized the Palestinian issue as one of the longest-standing conflicts on the global agenda.
Expressing condolences for the substantial loss of life and destruction in Gaza, the CPI denounced the ongoing military assaults by Israel, which it said had resulted in over 64,000 Palestinians dead and more than 160,000 injured, with a significant number being children. The resolution highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where severe shortages of food, clean water, electricity, and medical supplies have occurred, compounded by bombings that have devastated homes, hospitals, and essential infrastructure.
The resolution further criticized Israel’s intensified settler-colonial activities, including land seizures and the construction of illegal settlements, stating that these actions undermine the feasibility of a viable Palestinian state. The CPI noted that global public opinion and multiple United Nations General Assembly resolutions have consistently supported the Palestinian right to self-determination and called for an end to Israeli occupation and apartheid practices.
The CPI firmly condemned Israeli actions such as the occupation, blockade, and settlement expansion, categorizing them as war crimes and crimes against humanity. The party insisted on an unconditional ceasefire, the lifting of the blockade on Gaza, and full humanitarian access for international organizations to deliver aid.
Additionally, the CPI urged the Indian government to uphold its historical commitment to the Palestinian cause across bilateral, regional, and multilateral platforms, and to avoid military cooperation with Israel that could facilitate occupation efforts. The resolution advocated for increased humanitarian assistance to Palestine, including medical aid and scholarships for Palestinian students.
The CPI concluded by asserting that the liberation of Palestine is closely linked to broader struggles against imperialism, colonialism, and racism, pledging to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people until their legitimate rights, including the right to return and to live in peace and dignity, are achieved.
