Cooper Connolly prioritises game awareness over ultra-aggressive showing in IPL 2026

Australia international Cooper Connolly made a notable impression on his IPL debut, scoring an unbeaten 72 runs against the Gujarat Titans, leading the Punjab Kings to a three-wicket victory. The 22-year-old faced limited support from his teammates but successfully managed the innings, accelerating when necessary to secure the win.

In his second match against the Chennai Super Kings, Connolly began with a strong performance, contributing 36 runs from 22 balls before being dismissed by Anshul Kamboj. His early success has solidified his position in the playing XI, and he is widely regarded as a potential future star for Australian cricket.

Discussing his approach to the game, Connolly emphasized the significance of game awareness rather than merely focusing on maintaining a high strike rate. He acknowledged the excellent form of his opening partners, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, detailing how their performance allows him to assess the match situation more effectively.

“There hasn’t been much chat about the strike rate. It’s about playing what’s in front of you. Priyansh and Prabh are world-class at what they do,” Connolly remarked in an interview with India TV’s JioStar Press Room. “In the game against Chennai, Priyansh played some unbelievable shots, and it’s exciting to watch them go about their business.”

Connolly reiterated that discussions about a specific strike rate should not dominate a player’s focus. “It’s about understanding the conditions of the wicket and what is best suited. If I start worrying about strike rate, it becomes problematic. The focus should be on how I can change the game based on the situation,” he added as Punjab prepares for its rivalry week in the IPL.

The team, led by Shreyas Iyer, is scheduled to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 11, with rivalry week commencing the following evening. Fans can catch the live action on JioHotstar and Star Sports Network.
