A video recorded from inside the cruise that capsized at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur has emerged, highlighting the moments preceding the tragedy and raising concerns over safety protocols and possible negligence. The footage indicates that the boat was already on turbulent waters when two individuals were seen hurriedly unpacking life jackets, while many passengers remained without them. This aligns with survivor accounts indicating that safety gear was not distributed promptly.
The incident, which transpired on Thursday evening, has resulted in nine confirmed fatalities, with six individuals still unaccounted for. Rescue operations are ongoing, involving teams from the Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Disturbing reports about the final moments aboard the vessel continue to surface. Survivors have alleged that life jackets were stowed away rather than provided immediately, leading to chaotic scenes as the boat began to capsize.
Among the recovered bodies is 39-year-old Marina Massey, who was found holding her four-year-old son. Officials believe she tried to protect him as water flooded the lower cabin where they were trapped. Both were wearing life jackets, but the cramped environment likely diminished their chances of survival. Eyewitness accounts state that strong winds had created increasingly rough waters, prompting passengers to request the crew to return to shore. Reports suggest these warnings were either ignored or addressed too late. One survivor claimed that the boat was overcrowded, with even children without tickets present onboard.
In response to the incident, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department has dismissed several staff members and initiated an investigation. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced a suspension of similar cruise operations pending the inquiry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed condolences and pledged compensation for the families of the victims.
