Security Forces Prepare for Possible Infiltration Attempts Ahead of Winter in Kashmir

NEW DELHI: Senior officials from the Border Security Force (BSF) have reported an increased risk of infiltration by terrorists from across the Line of Control (LoC) into Jammu and Kashmir as winter approaches. Inspector General (IG) of BSF Kashmir Frontier, Ashok Yadav, informed media on Saturday that the period leading up to snowfall often sees a rise in infiltration attempts, as militant groups aim to exploit the diminishing opportunities for operations before severe winter weather makes movement more difficult.

“There are always attempts to infiltrate before snowfall. There are still about two months left, and chances of infiltration exist until November because they understand that opportunities will decrease significantly in the following six months,” Yadav stated. He emphasized that the heightened vigilance of security forces makes successful infiltration challenging.

According to Yadav, terrorist groups are stationed on launch pads across the LoC, particularly near the Bandipora and Kupwara sectors, awaiting suitable conditions, including adverse weather, to make their moves. “The presence of terrorists on these launch pads is noted, and they are looking for opportunities to infiltrate. However, the current security measures are robust,” he added.

He reaffirmed the effectiveness of the BSF and Army in monitoring the LoC, utilizing modern surveillance technology to bolster their defense. “Together with the Army, we are effectively dominating the LoC. To date, we have thwarted two infiltration attempts this year. The new surveillance methods and equipment, along with our alertness, make it very difficult to infiltrate our area of responsibility,” Yadav concluded.
