BrightNight announced on Tuesday the successful commissioning of the first phase of Optima Maharashtra, marking its inaugural 115 megawatt (MW) hybrid renewable energy project in India. This project is one of the first co-located wind-solar initiatives in the state.

This milestone represents BrightNight’s initial contribution to the Indian energy grid, aligning with its global commitment to decarbonize energy. The project is strategically located in Dharashiv, southern Maharashtra, covering approximately 14,000 acres. Optima Maharashtra combines cutting-edge wind and solar technologies, utilizing BrightNight’s innovative AI-powered PowerAlpha platform to maximize energy output while minimizing environmental impact.

“India’s rapid development, substantial energy needs, and supportive policy environment position it as a critical market for us. We are optimistic about delivering significant value in this region. Optima Maharashtra will be instrumental in propelling the state towards its clean energy objectives and aiding India in achieving its broader Net Zero targets,” stated Martin Hermann, CEO of BrightNight.

Optima Maharashtra is expected to significantly contribute to the state’s ambition of deriving 40 percent of its energy from renewable sources by the year 2030. The project will produce enough dispatchable clean energy to power approximately 230,000 households annually and is projected to prevent around 225,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Looking forward, BrightNight is set to commence construction on two large-scale projects in Rajasthan. These developments will integrate various clean energy technologies, including wind, solar, and battery storage systems, to provide peak power to clients connected to the national grid, as explained by Naveen Khandelwal, CEO of BrightNight India.

The company is actively pursuing multiple hybrid energy projects across several states, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Rajasthan. After establishing its presence in the U.S. market in 2019, India has emerged as BrightNight’s second major global market.

To bolster the growth of BrightNight’s extensive renewable energy portfolio in India, ACEN Corporation, based in the Philippines and part of the Ayala Group, pledged a $250 million investment in BrightNight India in 2023.
