Strong condemnation has emerged from Muslim religious and community leaders in response to the demolition of homes by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) in Thanisandra, north Bengaluru. Approximately 22 structures were razed without prior notice, rendering many families homeless.
Maulana Mufti Dr. Md Maqsood Imran Rashadi, Imam and Khateeb of Jamia Masjid in Bengaluru, visited Thoba Layout shortly after the demolitions. He described the BDA’s actions as a “blatant act of oppression” that occurred in the absence of notification, causing “irreparable damage.” He assured affected residents of the community’s support and emphasized efforts to prevent further demolitions.
The Imam also highlighted that Muslim leaders have met with Karnataka’s Chief Minister to express their concerns and dissatisfaction regarding the situation. They demanded action against the responsible officials and called for the immediate rehabilitation and resettlement of those displaced.
Mufti Iftikhar Ahmed Qasmi, President of Jamiat Ulama-i-Karnataka, criticized the government’s claims of ignorance concerning the demolitions in Kogilu and Thoba Layout. “If the government truly had no knowledge, it raises a serious question about who is actually running the administration,” he stated, condemning the use of bulldozer actions against minority houses.
Qasmi expressed concern that such actions reflect a troubling loss of humanity, exacerbating public anger and calling for accountability among officials. He urged immediate actions to restore public trust through fair rehabilitation of affected families.
According to earlier reports by Maktoob, these demolitions were executed in the early morning hours without any written notice, as confirmed by BDA officials. Residents reported that officials, accompanied by police and earthmovers, arrived around 7 a.m., ordered them to vacate immediately, and began demolishing homes despite many holding valid property documents.
BDA Commissioner P. Manivannan later acknowledged a lapse by the agency’s Special Task Force, admitting that there was no record of notices being served to residents. While the BDA announced rehabilitation measures and initiated a probe led by retired Justice Niyaz Ahmed to investigate the matter within 30 days, community leaders emphasized that accountability is essential to prevent further marginalization of affected communities.
