Bengal’s Suvendu Adhikari Holds Bhabanipur Seat, Defeating Mamata Banerjee Again, Nandigram in Focus

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Wednesday that he will retain the Bhabanipur seat and vacate Nandigram following his victories in both constituencies during the recent West Bengal assembly elections. Suvendu contested from Nandigram, his stronghold, as well as from Bhabanipur, a constituency historically associated with former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“I cannot take oath as an MLA from two assembly constituencies. I have taken oath as the MLA from Bhabanipur. I will have to leave the Nandigram Assembly constituency,” Adhikari stated.

He emphasized that with the support of the people and under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, his party has gained entry into the legislative assembly. “The budget will be presented here. 143 MLAs will take oath here today. The new Speaker will be elected tomorrow,” he added.

Suvendu achieved a significant victory in Bhabanipur, a seat closely linked to Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC). This follows his previous defeat of Mamata in Nandigram during the 2021 assembly elections after he left the TMC to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This time, he directly challenged Mamata again by contesting from Bhabanipur, which became one of the key political battlegrounds of the election.
