The Hague Group convened over thirty governments on Friday to develop a unified global strategy to combat the ongoing violence in Gaza. The coalition urged states to sever ties of complicity with Israel in areas such as arms, finance, and energy, emphasizing the need for the international community to take decisive action rather than merely issuing statements.
The group pointed out that one year prior, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/ES-10/24, which called on Israel to comply with an International Court of Justice advisory opinion from July 2024. This opinion mandated that Israel cease its “unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory” within twelve months, a deadline which has now passed with Israel reportedly ignoring the resolution and continuing its actions.
Established in January, The Hague Group includes thirty countries from various regions, including Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. It aims to address complicity and end impunity by collectively upholding international law. Over the past year, member states have enacted concrete measures through national legislation and executive orders, such as halting arms transfers, blocking weapon shipments, suspending contracts with Israeli firms, ceasing energy exports, and ensuring accountability in both national and international courts.
Held in New York alongside the 80th UN General Assembly, the high-level meeting sought to consolidate these efforts into a joint action plan to address the situation in Gaza. The participants affirmed that “accountability as a principle cannot be forsaken,” and stressed that Israel must not be allowed to continue its alleged crimes without facing consequences.
During the meeting, leaders reinforced their belief that all states have obligations to prevent genocide and uphold international law. They called for coordinated enforcement across various sectors, including courts, ports, contracts, factories, and financial systems, as essential steps toward justice for the Palestinian people.
The group underlined the importance of a global response to Israel’s actions, stating that such coordination not only strengthens accountability mechanisms but also sets an example for compliance with international obligations. Colombia and South Africa, serving as co-chairs of The Hague Group, reiterated their commitment to this cause and emphasized their collective stance in defense of international law.
The leaders asserted, “The choice before every government is clear: complicity or compliance,” and warned that history will judge them based on their actions rather than their rhetoric. They called on all states to join their initiative to cut ties of complicity and ensure the timely delivery of justice.
The Hague Group consists of a coalition of countries focused on coordinated legal and diplomatic measures in support of international law and solidarity with Palestinians. Alongside Colombia and South Africa, it includes nations such as Bolivia, Cuba, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, and Senegal.
