Rupee Declines 4 Paise to 95.74 Against US Dollar During Early Trading Hours

Summary

The Indian rupee experienced a slight decline against the US dollar in early trading, falling by 4 paise to 95.74 as geopolitical uncertainties, particularly surrounding Iran, influenced market dynamics. Despite this dip, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) intervened to stabilize the currency, maintaining it within a narrow trading range. Concurrently, the dollar index rose slightly, responding to heightened safe-haven demand amid ongoing global economic concerns.

Current Exchange Rates and Market Performance

The rupee opened at 95.74 against the dollar, marking a decrease of 4 paise from the previous session, where it recorded a marginal gain of 1 paisa to settle at 95.70. Forex traders noted that importer demand for dollars and rising crude oil prices exerted pressure on the rupee. Moreover, the intervention by the RBI through state-run banks aimed to contain volatility in the currency markets. Traders expect the USD/INR pair to remain confined within the 95.50 to 96.00 range in the short term.

Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, indicated that the interaction between crude oil prices and RBI measures will significantly influence the rupee’s value. Recent trends suggest that RBI’s dollar purchases are aimed at strengthening the rupee’s lower boundaries while simultaneously selling at levels around 95.75 to mitigate downward pressure.
