A devastating fire in New Delhi’s Malviya Nagar neighborhood has resulted in the deaths of at least 21 individuals, with numerous others sustaining injuries. The fire erupted on Wednesday in a multistorey building that accommodates a restaurant on the ground floor and a hotel above, located in an area densely populated by students and young professionals. The Delhi police reported that eight fire engines were deployed to control the blaze, which was ultimately brought under control, allowing for the rescue of more than 40 people who were subsequently transported to nearby hospitals. Eyewitness accounts indicate that some individuals were seen hanging from windows as flames and smoke engulfed parts of the structure. Among the victims were foreign nationals seeking medical treatment in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to the victims’ families, pledging financial assistance of 200,000 rupees (approximately $2,088) for each deceased victim. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in densely populated urban areas, where inadequate enforcement of building regulations and fire safety codes frequently lead to tragic incidents.
