Smallcase Launches Managed Mutual Fund Portfolios to Streamline Investment Strategies for Investors

Investment platform smallcase has diversified its offerings by launching mutual fund model portfolios, aimed at facilitating a transition for investors from selecting individual schemes to investing through professionally managed portfolio strategies.

Headquartered in Bengaluru, the company has rolled out over 30 mutual fund portfolios categorized into fund selections, multi-asset strategies, and cash management solutions. These portfolios integrate direct mutual funds from various asset management companies (AMCs) and are tailored to meet specific investment goals, risk profiles, and time horizons.

“Over the years, we’ve seen investors shift from choosing individual products to looking for more structured portfolio approaches. Mutual Fund smallcases are a natural extension of this trend. Mutual funds have long been a trusted choice for Indian investors. These portfolios enable a shift from individual fund selection to managed investment strategies,” stated Vasanth Kamath, founder and CEO of smallcase.

The introduction of mutual fund model portfolios marks the company’s entry into a new sector, having previously focused on stock, ETF, REIT, and InvIT model portfolios. According to Kamath, smallcase has facilitated transactions exceeding ₹2 lakh crore since its inception in 2016, with the model increasingly recognized as a distinct investment product type.

Kamath highlighted that the mutual fund portfolio format aims to ease the daunting task faced by retail investors in navigating a crowded mutual fund landscape and constructing balanced portfolios aligned with their financial goals. “The idea of investing with a specific objective becomes significantly simpler with mutual fund smallcases. Whether it’s parking cash, building a multi-asset portfolio, or selecting fund managers for long-term goals, this format simplifies decision-making for investors,” he explained.

The portfolios are available via the company’s execution-only platform (EOP), allowing investors to opt for both lump-sum and systematic investment plan (SIP) modes utilizing direct mutual fund plans. Investors retain ownership of the underlying mutual funds and receive updates and rebalancing recommendations through the platform.

Drawing parallels with international markets, Kamath asserted that model portfolios have emerged as a significant wealth management channel in developed economies, anticipating a similar trend in India as advisors, research analysts, and asset managers increasingly adopt this format. “We believe model portfolios will serve as a crucial intermediary between investors and investment products. Just as they have transformed advisory and portfolio construction in markets like the US, we expect mutual fund model portfolios to witness considerable adoption in India in the coming years,” said Kamath.
