Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav Invites Public Input on Implementing Uniform Civil Code After Assam

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Monday that his government is dedicated to implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, initiating the process of gathering public feedback before proceeding with the proposal.

During his address, Yadav emphasized that maintaining different personal laws for marriage and family matters based on religion is outdated and that Madhya Pradesh should adopt a unified legal framework. “The current practice of following different personal laws regarding our sisters’ weddings and family traditions based on religion is no longer necessary. We need a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state,” he stated.

To facilitate the UCC’s implementation, the state government has established a committee led by a former Supreme Court judge to collect input from individuals of various religious backgrounds across different districts in Madhya Pradesh. This initiative is inspired by other states that have already adopted the UCC, such as Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam.

Yadav highlighted the committee’s composition, which includes scholars from diverse fields, tasked with compiling public suggestions to expedite the UCC’s implementation. “The goal is to compile these suggestions and expedite the implementation of UCC in Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh wishes that it should be implemented and we will be proud our government will move in this direction,” he asserted.

A dedicated website has also been launched to gather public feedback, and Yadav encouraged residents to share their thoughts on the proposed legislation. “A website has been launched to collect public suggestions, and I appeal to the public to contribute their thoughts on the matter on it,” he urged.

As part of the ongoing push for the UCC, Yadav reiterated that Madhya Pradesh is well-positioned for such a legal overhaul and expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to advance the proposal under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. His announcement aligns with the recent advancements in UCC legislation in several BJP-ruled states.

Uttarakhand was the first to pass a Uniform Civil Code Bill in February 2024, followed by Gujarat, which approved its UCC legislation in March 2026 after extensive discussions. Most recently, Assam enacted its Uniform Civil Code Bill on May 27, becoming the first northeastern state and the third BJP-ruled state to do so. The law aims to create a shared civil framework governing marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships for all citizens, regardless of religion. Key aspects of the Assam legislation include a prohibition on polygamy, compulsory registration of marriages and live-in arrangements, and penalties for violations.

In a separate meeting, Yadav reviewed the progress of various welfare schemes in the women and child development department, directing officials to ensure effective implementation. Attending the meeting were Women and Child Development Minister Nirmala Bhuria and senior department officials.
