New Delhi: India captain Harmanpreet Kaur has recounted a pivotal moment from the team’s World Cup-winning journey, highlighting a rare emotional address from head coach Amol Muzumdar following a challenging phase in the tournament.
India’s campaign began on a strong note with victories against Sri Lanka and Pakistan; however, they faced setbacks after losses to South Africa, Australia, and England. Particularly painful was the defeat to England, where India fell short by just four runs while chasing 289 runs. This loss proved to be a turning point in the dressing room.
In an appearance on JioStar’s “Unstoppable,” ahead of the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup in the United Kingdom, Harmanpreet detailed Muzumdar’s message to the squad post the England match. “After the England match, Amol sir was the only one who spoke, and he was very straightforward. Everybody took it in the right spirit because we all knew there was nothing wrong in what he was saying. That was the first time I saw his volume go a little high because he is usually a very soft-spoken person. I remember him saying, ‘Go and buy a mirror and see what you’re doing and what you need to do at that stage,’” Harmanpreet stated.
The Indian team responded remarkably after this moment, achieving wins over New Zealand that led to a semifinal showdown against the defending champions, Australia. Additionally, their group match against Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain.
Subsequently, India delivered an exceptional performance, executing a record chase against Australia in the semifinal. In the final, they triumphed over South Africa, led by Laura Wolvaardt, to claim the trophy. During the interview, Harmanpreet also reflected on her approach to social media during major tournaments, expressing a desire to remain unaffected by external opinions. “I do not like to read too much into it. Maybe after the tournament, I go through a few things which I think are important. Because I also know that if I am doing well, I know I am doing well, and if I am not doing well, I do not need to read what others are thinking or take advice from everyone,” she explained.
