NEW DELHI: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh confirmed that a swift rescue operation successfully evacuated 300 tourists stranded in a cable car at Gulmarg, following a technical malfunction that halted the Gulmarg Gondola service on Monday.

Singh shared details on X, stating, “A joint rescue team comprising the Indian Army, J&K Police, NDRF, SDRF, and civil administration carried out the challenging operation with efficiency and resolve.”

The incident occurred around 1 PM when the technical disruption interrupted the gondola service at the popular tourist destination in north Kashmir. Tariq Hussain Naik, Chief Executive Officer of the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA), noted that the cable car service comprises two phases: the first runs from Gulmarg to Kongdoori at an elevation of approximately 2,600 meters, while the second stretches from Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak, reaching nearly 3,979 meters. Both phases were suspended in response to the incident.

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir promptly launched rescue operations to address the situation.
