Hyundai Accelerates SUV Launches in India
Hyundai Motor India is intensifying its focus on the SUV segment as competition grows in India’s automotive market. The company plans to unveil a series of new models in the coming years to strengthen its position.
One of the upcoming models is the new internal combustion engine (ICE) SUV, known internally as Bc4i, alongside the HE1i, which will be a compact electric SUV. Both vehicles are slated for a 2026 debut, part of Hyundai’s strategy to introduce over 24 new products in India in the near future.
The Bc4i is designed on the i20 platform and is expected to measure approximately 4.18 meters. While aimed to compete with models like the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, its primary competitor appears to be the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Victoris. The Bc4i will feature naturally aspirated petrol engines along with CNG variants, targeting cost-effective ownership and enhanced fuel efficiency. Advanced features will include connected car technology, sophisticated infotainment systems, and premium interior finishes.
In addition to the Bc4i, Hyundai is set to launch the HE1i, a sub-four-meter compact electric vehicle aimed at taking on the Tata Nexon EV, which is currently one of the most popular electric vehicles in India. Hyundai is emphasizing localization in production, competitive pricing, and designs suited for urban driving and everyday affordability.
Hyundai seeks to reduce its dependence on a limited range of successful models. While the Creta remains a strong performer in the market, competition is mounting. Tarun Garg, a spokesperson for Hyundai, confirmed that the company will introduce two new nameplates, with one being a locally developed compact EV and the other enhancing their ICE SUV offerings.
Hyundai is targeting a domestic sales growth of 8 to 10 percent by FY27, underlining its commitment to launching new models and expanding production capacity to achieve this goal.
