Political Maneuvering in Tamil Nadu: Vijay Seeks Allies as AIADMK Faces Dissent and DMK-Congress Ties Waver

NEW DELHI: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamil Nadu Vikas Katchi (TVK) has initiated efforts to form the government in Tamil Nadu, emerging as the single-largest party but falling short of the majority by 10 seats. Reports indicate that TVK is seeking the support of smaller parties such as the Congress, PMK, Left parties, CPM, and VCK, which could enable the party to achieve the necessary majority.

TVK chief Vijay has also requested an appointment with Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar as part of the government formation process.

In recent developments, the Tamil Nadu Congress reportedly decided to support the establishment of a secular government in the state. This decision, made during an urgent meeting of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) late Tuesday night, signifies a shift in alliances, as the Congress had previously contested the election in coalition with the DMK. The AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu, Girish Chodankar, convened the meeting, where senior members expressed their support for Vijay.

“The PAC of the Tamil Nadu Congress unanimously decided to support TVK leader Thiru Vijay to form a secular government in Tamil Nadu,” sources reported. The Congress aims to project a commitment to secular governance, distancing itself from any association with the BJP, which it claims does not reflect the mandate of the state.

Tensions arose within the Secular Progressive Alliance as the DMK accused Congress of “backstabbing” its partners amid rising speculation that Congress would prioritize support for TVK. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai criticized the decision, stating, “This is a very short-sighted, myopic stand taken by the Congress, which they will regret.” He emphasized that this decision undermines the coalition’s strength going into the 2029 elections.

Reports indicate that dissent is also growing within the AIADMK, where a faction is advocating for supporting Vijay in his government formation efforts. These members reportedly express dissatisfaction with Edappadi Palaniswami’s leadership and are inclined to collaborate with TVK.

TVK currently holds 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, just 10 seats short of the 118 required for a majority. The party is expected to align with smaller parties such as Congress and the Left Front.

Simultaneously, victorious TVK MLAs have been accommodated in a luxury resort in Mamallapuram, following discussions with party leader Vijay. A heavy police presence has been established around the resort, with heightened surveillance measures in place. Over 50 MLAs are currently staying at the Four Points Star hotel, and more are expected to arrive throughout the day.

As the situation develops, the coming days will be critical in determining the framework of the government, whether through an understanding with Congress, a broader coalition of smaller parties, or another combination. The era of TVK appears to be on the horizon, yet the precise nature of its governance remains uncertain.
