New Delhi: Delhi Capitals opener KL Rahul has emerged as a formidable player in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), amassing 433 runs in nine matches at an impressive strike rate of 185.83, positioning him as the second-leading run-scorer of the season. In a recent match against Punjab, the 34-year-old became the first Indian cricketer to score more than 150 runs in a single IPL innings. Furthermore, in Delhi’s last outing against Rajasthan, he added 75 runs to his tally.
Rahul’s exceptional form has played a crucial role in keeping Delhi’s playoff hopes alive. He expressed satisfaction in moving beyond his reputation as a Test specialist and noted his evolution in the T20 format. Reflecting on his journey, Rahul acknowledged his past mistakes, emphasizing his commitment to continual improvement. “Ten years ago, I would have given anything to be part of a T20 team. I was never rated as a T20 player or even considered a good white-ball player; I was branded a Test player. It’s something I’m really proud of to break out of that mold, develop my white-ball game and come this far,” he stated during JioStar’s ‘Superstars’ segment. “I still have some time left. So, I’ll keep trying my best and see how many trophies I can win.”
During IPL 2020, Rahul garnered attention for his statement that “strike rate is overrated,” which went viral on social media. Six years later, he emphasizes the importance of adapting his game. He revealed that discussions with team management prior to the season conveyed a clear directive: to maximize scoring during the powerplay and aim for at least 10 runs per over in the first six overs.
“T20 cricket has evolved significantly over the last two or three years, especially in the IPL. Teams that excel in the Powerplay tend to secure victories,” Rahul noted. “A few years ago, matches were often determined during the last overs. The powerplay holds even more significance now, and I’ve had to adjust my approach for the team.” He highlighted the clarity provided by management regarding his role at the top of the order, which helped him strategize while considering his skills.
The Delhi Capitals are set to face the Chennai Super Kings on May 5, with fans able to catch the action live on the Star Sports network and JioStar.
