New Delhi: The Mumbai Indians’ campaign in IPL 2026 has taken a devastating turn, suffering their sixth defeat of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad, losing by six wickets at Wankhede Stadium. Despite posting a formidable total of 243/5, the MI bowling lineup was unable to contain the powerful batting lineup of SRH, who successfully chased down the target in just 18.4 overs.
On paper, MI boasts a robust squad; however, the much-anticipated talent has not translated into on-field success. The team began the season with a victory but has managed just one additional win in their subsequent seven matches.
In the latest matchup against SRH, an explosive 129-run opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, achieved in a mere 52 balls, set the tone for the visitors. Although MI managed to claim three quick wickets, Heinrich Klaasen and Salil Arora ensured a smooth finish, showcasing impressive power-hitting.
How can MI still qualify for playoffs?
Despite their recent setbacks, MI remains in contention for a playoff position. They currently have two wins out of eight matches, totaling four points. With six matches left in the season, all of which are crucial, MI’s path to qualification is dependent on their performance.
If MI secures victories in all six remaining matches, they can finish with 16 points, likely sufficient for playoff qualification. Conversely, claiming five out of six wins would result in 14 points, which may not guarantee advancement.
What are MI’s remaining fixtures?
Next up, MI faces the Chennai Super Kings on May 2 at Chepauk, followed by a home match against the Lucknow Super Giants on May 4. The team will then embark on a three-match road trip, taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 10 at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, the Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on May 14, and the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on May 20. The final group match will be at home against the Rajasthan Royals on May 24.
