Bhuvneshwar Kumar Reveals Major Shift in T20 Batting: Batters Embrace Aggression

Royal Challengers Bengaluru fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar recently discussed the significant changes in T20 batting, noting that contemporary players no longer hold back during the initial overs of the game, unlike past practices where they would show more respect for the first few deliveries. He highlighted how modern batters have transformed the landscape of T20 cricket, resulting in remarkable scoring rates.

Speaking to JioStar, Bhuvneshwar remarked, “The biggest change is that batters no longer hold back, even when the ball is swinging in the Powerplay.” He emphasized that players previously adapted their aggression to fit the conditions but that this mindset has shifted toward a more consistently aggressive approach. This has necessitated a change in strategy for bowlers, where being defensive should not be viewed negatively. Instead, bowlers need to focus on a specific plan and exploit batters’ weaknesses.

Preparation and situational awareness are increasingly vital, Bhuvneshwar added, stressing the importance of detailed planning. He noted that having experienced players like Josh Hazlewood enhances on-field communication, which is crucial for adapting to varying conditions.

In reflecting on his own strategies, Bhuvneshwar mentioned that on flat wickets with little assistance, he adopts a more defensive approach aimed at controlling runs and minimizing boundaries, particularly against aggressive hitters. Conversely, when conditions favor swing, he shifts to an aggressive mindset seeking wickets. “Even if you get a bit of luck with edges or movement,” he said, “the intent is to keep attacking and create opportunities rather than just containing.”

In a recent match where Bhuvneshwar took three wickets, helping the team restrict Delhi Capitals to just 75 runs, newcomers like Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal successfully led the chase for RCB, ultimately scoring 76 runs. Kohli’s form has drawn notable praise. Former New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan commended Kohli’s consistency and adaptability throughout his IPL career. “Scoring 9000 IPL runs against the world’s best bowlers is no easy task,” McClenaghan stated. He further discussed Kohli’s journey, noting that he evolved from batting in the lower middle order to becoming a prolific run-scorer, suggesting that Kohli will soon surpass the 10,000-run milestone in the IPL. “Kohli is the greatest batter the IPL has ever seen,” McClenaghan concluded, pointing to his dominance across different eras as a key aspect of his legacy.
