NIA Investigates Bomb Seizure Amid Tensions in West Bengal’s Bhangar Polls

The Central Government has ordered an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) following the recovery of 79 crude bombs in Bhangar on Saturday. The order states that authorities believe a Scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, has occurred, involving the illegal storage and handling of explosives intended to endanger public safety and create fear among citizens.

According to reports, a team from the North Kashipur police station conducted a raid on an abandoned house near a burial ground in Poilepara, leading to the discovery of the explosives—described as “79 round-shaped objects tied with jute ropes”—along with other incriminating materials. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection to the case. Sources indicate that the NIA may question local figure Wahidul Islam regarding the investigation.

Tensions escalated in Bhangar on Saturday when residents allegedly attacked Wahidul, a key suspect in a bomb blast case from March 19, after he returned to the area. He had been evading authorities since the incident. Residents reportedly recognized him in the Chak Moricha Tetultala Ghat area, and after surrounding him, they assaulted him before handing him over to the police.

Bhangar is currently embroiled in a contentious electoral battle. Trinamool Congress candidate Saokat Molla is facing off against the Indian Secular Front (ISF) leader Nawsad Siddique. Siddique previously unseated Trinamool in the 2021 elections, although the party’s Saayoni Ghosh achieved a successful campaign in Jadavpur during the Lok Sabha elections.
