Deadly Bombing on Colombian Highway Claims 19 Lives Days Before Election

A bomb attack on the Pan-American Highway in the southwestern Cauca department of Colombia has resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people and injuries to over 38 others. The violence occurred just over a month before the upcoming presidential election, raising concerns about security in the region. The explosion, which left buses and vans severely damaged, was triggered after assailants blocked the road with a bus and another vehicle. Military chief Hugo Lopez reported that the attack may be linked to Ivan Mordisco, a notorious criminal in Colombia, with President Gustavo Petro attributing the blame to him. This incident follows an earlier bomb attack on a military base in Cali that injured two individuals, highlighting a recent surge in violence with at least 26 attacks recorded in the area over the past two days. Authorities have since increased military and police presence in response to the escalating situation, as security remains a critical issue ahead of the May 31 presidential election.
