Fish Waste Transformed into Valuable Biomedical Material for Innovative Health Solutions

Scientists at the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) in Kochi have developed a patented technology to transform fish scale waste into nanofibre-based graft materials that can accelerate bone and dental healing. This innovation addresses a dual challenge: repurposing what has been traditionally viewed as waste while providing valuable resources for advanced healthcare applications.

The research team, led by Senior Scientist Binsi PK, collaborated with Sobi K Chacko of Catholicate College, Raneesh B from Pushpagiri College of Dental Sciences, and Nebu George Thomas of Pushpagiri Medical College. India produces over 19 million tonnes of fish annually, resulting in approximately 4-6 million tonnes of waste. Historically, this biomaterial has been utilized for low-value applications such as fish meal or discarded entirely. However, researchers are now recognizing it as a rich biological resource containing collagen, calcium compounds, and bioactive molecules.

Fish scales, in particular, are gaining attention as a significant source of hydroxyapatite, a mineral closely resembling human bone and tooth enamel. Utilizing an advanced electro-spinning process, researchers produce ultra-thin nanofibres that serve as scaffolds for tissue regeneration. Unlike traditional graft materials that primarily occupy defects, these nanofibres actively promote healing by enabling the attachment and proliferation of bone-forming cells. They also support the controlled release of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agents, helping to reduce infection risks and improve recovery outcomes in dental and orthopedic procedures.

The implications of this development extend beyond the technology itself, indicating a shift in how fish waste is perceived. Parts of fish, including skin, bones, scales, and shellfish residues, host distinct compounds that can be utilized for specialized industrial applications.

While countries like Japan and Norway have effectively demonstrated the economic benefits of converting fish waste into high-value products through efficient segregation and processing systems, India faces challenges stemming from fragmented supply chains and minimal value addition. The CIFT innovation highlights the potential for a circular bio-economy, where waste materials are reintegrated into productive uses. Even partial conversion of fish waste into biomedical-grade materials could yield significant economic returns while alleviating environmental burdens.

This initiative not only addresses a longstanding environmental issue but also opens up new avenues for research, entrepreneurship, and job opportunities in coastal regions where fish processing remains a crucial livelihood. By converting fish waste into advanced medical materials, scientists are paving the way for innovative solutions in healthcare.
