Modi Government’s Women’s Reservation Amendment Fails in Lok Sabha: What Lies Ahead?

The Lok Sabha has rejected the government’s proposal aimed at expanding its membership from 543 to 850 seats and permitting delimitation based on the 2011 Census. This marks the first constitutional amendment bill failure introduced by the Modi administration in the Lok Sabha in 12 years.

During the vote on the women’s reservation bill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present alongside Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Piyush Goyal, Kiren Rijiju, Pralhad Joshi, and other parliament members at the Special session of Parliament in New Delhi on April 17, 2026.

The failure of this bill highlights ongoing debates surrounding women’s representation in Indian politics and the challenges faced by the Modi government in pushing legislative changes. The rejection is significant in the context of the broader discussions about women’s rights and political participation in India.
