Members of the United Nations Security Council have condemned the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States. An emergency meeting was convened to discuss the recent US raid in Venezuela that led to Maduro’s capture.

During the meeting, tensions escalated between the American and Venezuelan ambassadors, while UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern over the implications of this action for Venezuela’s immediate future and for regional stability, as reported by Al Jazeera.

Countries including Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Eritrea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and Spain have denounced the US intervention, which took place over the weekend. Guterres warned that Maduro’s capture could exacerbate instability within Venezuela and threaten the broader region. He also questioned whether the operation adhered to international law.

“I am deeply concerned about the possible intensification of instability in the country, the potential impact on the region, and the precedent it may set for how relations between and among states are conducted,” Guterres stated.

Sérgio França Danese, the Brazilian ambassador to the UN, characterized the US actions as crossing “an unacceptable line” and creating a “dangerous precedent” for the international community.

In defense of the operation, Donald Trump’s UN ambassador, Mike Waltz, called it a legitimate “law enforcement” action aimed at executing longstanding criminal indictments against an “illegitimate” leader, asserting that it was not an act of war.
