Equity benchmarks reversed early gains and dipped into negative territory by Wednesday afternoon, with the Sensex down 241.66 points or 0.29 percent at 84,424.62 and the Nifty declining 63.75 points or 0.25 percent to 25,775.90 as of 12:45 p.m. This movement occurred ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy announcement later in the day.
The Sensex opened lower at 84,607.49 compared to its previous close of 84,666.28, reaching an intraday high of 85,020.34 before falling to a low of 84,421.29. Similarly, the Nifty began at 25,864.05, compared to its last close of 25,839.65, achieving a high of 25,947.65 and dipping to 25,769.10 during the session.
Market breadth remained moderately positive, with 2,044 stocks advancing compared to 1,919 that declined on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Additionally, 192 stocks remained unchanged, 63 reached 52-week highs, and 79 hit 52-week lows. A total of 163 stocks were locked in upper circuit filters, while 134 faced lower circuit restrictions.
Eicher Motors topped the Nifty gainers, rising 1.61 percent to ₹7,237.50, followed closely by HDFC Life at ₹773.95, up 1.45 percent, and Hindalco at ₹823.95, gaining 1.36 percent. Tata Steel increased by 0.85 percent to ₹162.03, while Adani Ports rose 0.58 percent to ₹1,505.90.
On the other hand, IndiGo was the top loser, dropping 2.52 percent to ₹4,842.50, followed by Eicher Eternal, which fell 2.19 percent to ₹285.30. HDFC Bank declined by 1.11 percent to ₹986, Apollo Hospitals fell 1.01 percent to ₹7,019.50, and Bajaj Finance slipped by 0.84 percent to ₹1,008.20.
Sectoral indices displayed a mixed performance, with Nifty Next 50 slightly up by 15.70 points or 0.02 percent to 67,720.15, while Bank Nifty fell by 284.75 points or 0.48 percent to 58,937.60. Nifty Midcap 100 decreased by 333.10 points or 0.56 percent to 59,343.10, Nifty Financial Services dropped 152.40 points or 0.55 percent to 27,397.35, and Nifty Smallcap 100 fell by 65.55 points or 0.38 percent to 17,180.25.
