Benchmark indices extended gains, with Nifty 50 climbing 149 points and Sensex rallying 550 points, as upbeat global cues, renewed foreign investor buying, tracking strength across Asian markets amid optimism over a potential resolution to the US government shutdown and easing global risk concerns.
Sensex traded 471.46 points or 0.57 per cent higher at 83,687.74 at 1.10 pm, hitting an intraday high of 83,754.49. Nifty 50 gained 140.95 points or 0.55 per cent to 25,633.25 after opening at 25,503.50 (also its intraday low).
Sensex closed at 83,216.28 on Friday, and Nifty 50 settled at 25,492.30.

Top gainers & losers today
Infosys, Grasim Industries, HCL Tech, Asian Paints and Wipro led the gainers of Nifty 50, while Trent, Tata Consumer Products, Max Health, Apollo Hospitals and Eternal traded as major laggards.
About 3,096 stocks were traded on the National Stock Exchange, of which 1,539 stocks advanced, 1,462 declined and 95 remained unchanged.
Meanwhile, 75 stocks (including AU Small Finance, Canara Bank, IOC and Laurus Labs) touched their 52-week highs, and 118 hit 52-week lows. 76 stocks were locked in the upper circuit, whereas 71 hit the lower circuit.
Vodafone Idea, Reliance Power, PC Jeweller, National Aluminium and Suzlon were among the most active equities by volume.
Midcap and smallcap movers today
Under the midcap segment, National Aluminium, Nykaa, Bharat Dynamics, SAIL and Lupin zoomed 3-8 per cent, while IRB, Premier Energies, Fortis, Paytm and BSE depreciated 1-3 per cent.
Smallcap stocks HBL Engineering, JB Chemicals, Reliance Power, GRSE and Jindal Saw rallied 4-10 per cent. Ola Electric, KEC, IGIL, Whirlpool, Amber and Aster DM Healthcare fell 3-5 per cent.
In addition, the much-awaited Lenskart Solutions made a tepid debut today. At the time of writing, the stock traded at ₹404.85 on the NSE, moderating between ₹356.10 and ₹413.75.
On the BSE, Indigo Paints, HBL Engineering, Voltamp Transformers, National Aluminium and Nykaa zoomed 7-13 per cent. TARIL, Aarti Pharmalabs, Neogen, Sanghvi Movers and Indraprastha Medical dragged by 8-20 per cent.
