The Bihar Police on Saturday arrested Janata Dal (United) leader and Mokama Assembly candidate Anant Singh in connection with the killing of a Jan Suraaj worker, which followed a violent clash between alleged supporters of the two parties earlier this week.

The victim, Dularchand Yadav, was found dead inside a vehicle in Tartar village of Patna district on Thursday.

The police said that, along with Singh, two others, Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram, have also been arrested in the case.

The incident took place in the Mokama Assembly constituency, which is scheduled to vote on November 6.

During a press conference, Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikeya Sharma said that all three accused were present at the site of the clash and would be produced before the magistrate. He added that the post-mortem report revealed Yadav had died of cardiorespiratory failure caused by shock due to injuries to the heart and lungs inflicted by a hard and blunt object.

“Therefore, the post-mortem report and preliminary investigation suggest that it’s a case of murder,” Sharma said, as quoted by PTI.

According to the police, four FIRs have been registered in connection with the clashes, including one related to the violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

Jan Suraaj’s Mokama candidate Priyadarshi Piyush had told the police that the confrontation occurred when his convoy encountered the JD(U) convoy between Tartar and Basavanchak villages while on his way for election campaigning.

Piyush said, “As the two convoys came face to face, an altercation broke out, followed by stone pelting and physical assault.”

Responding to the allegations, Anant Singh stated that he and his supporters were interacting with voters when members of the Jan Suraaj convoy allegedly began shouting slogans against them.

“I told my supporters not to respond and we moved away,” Singh said. “Some of my vehicles were behind us when their convoy began attacking. I moved ahead with about 30 vehicles behind me, and they attacked nearly 10 of the vehicles at the rear. Several of my supporters’ vehicles were vandalised.”
