Paytm Empowers NRIs with UPI Payments Using International Mobile Numbers

Paytm has launched a service allowing Non-Resident Indians from 12 countries to make UPI payments in India using their international mobile numbers, the company announced today. The feature eliminates the need for a local Indian SIM card and works with NRE or NRO bank accounts.

NRIs can now use the Paytm app to send money, pay merchants through QR codes, and shop on Indian platforms without currency conversions or international payment gateways.

The service enables instant fund transfers to UPI IDs or mobile numbers, bypassing traditional remittance delays and foreign exchange charges.

The National Payments Corporation of India powers the service, which is available to Indians residing in Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, USA, Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK, France, and Malaysia. Currently in beta testing, the feature will roll out to all eligible users in coming days.

Paytm’s platform offers additional features including downloadable UPI statements in PDF or Excel formats, automatic expense categorization, payment hiding options, and consolidated balance viewing across linked bank accounts. The app also includes an AI-generated spending summary feature called Paytm Playback.

To use the service, NRIs must download the Paytm app, log in with their international number, verify via SMS, and link their bank account. The company positions this launch as part of its broader financial inclusion strategy, aimed at keeping Indians worldwide connected to India’s digital payments ecosystem.

The shares of One 97 Communications Limited ended on the NSE today at ₹1,305.60 up by ₹18.60 or 1.45 per cent.
