A 22-year-old engineering student, Udit Gaayki, died following an alleged assault by two police constables in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Gaayki, a final-year B.Tech student at a prominent private engineering college near the city, was reportedly attacked around 1:30 a.m. on the night of Thursday into Friday while returning from a party.

CCTV footage of the incident shows the two constables, Santosh Bamniya and Saurabh Arya, who were on night patrol, brutally beating Gaayki with batons. According to reports, he sustained a pancreatic hemorrhage, collapsed, and died a few hours later at AIIMS Bhopal.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-2) Vivek Singh stated that the incident began when Gaayki and his friends allegedly broke a bottle on the road. While two of his friends managed to flee on a two-wheeler, Gaayki attempted to escape on foot but was caught by the constables in a nearby lane, where the alleged assault occurred.

One of Gaayki’s friends told The Indian Express that he was driving him home when police intercepted them. Udit, the only son in his family and related to a local Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was reportedly beaten after the officers demanded a bribe. The friend recounted hearing sounds of a struggle, and upon reaching the scene, observed Gaayki’s torn shirt and visible injuries, especially on his head. The constables purportedly demanded ₹10,000 to cease their assault.

A post-mortem examination at AIIMS Bhopal confirmed pancreatic hemorrhage and injuries consistent with baton use, as reiterated by DCP Singh.

An investigation into the incident has been initiated, and in response to the tragedy, Udit’s relatives and friends gathered outside AIIMS-Bhopal before protesting at the Piplani police station. The two constables involved in the incident have since been suspended.
