Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been rested for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, which begins on October 19. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the rationale behind this decision, indicating that with Axar Patel already in the squad, there was no necessity for two left-arm spinners.
The decision sparked some speculation regarding Jadeja’s future in ODIs, particularly with India gearing up for the 2027 World Cup. However, Jadeja remains an integral part of the team’s plans. After Day 2 of the current Test series against the West Indies, he shared that he had a constructive conversation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and new ODI captain Shubman Gill, both of whom reassured him of his importance in future lineups. Jadeja expressed optimism about his career and emphasized his desire to contribute to India’s success in the ODI World Cup in 2027.
“See, this is not in my hands. I want to play the World Cup, of course, but at the end of the day, there’s some thinking from the team management, selectors, coach, and captain about why they didn’t keep me in this series. There must be some reason behind it. And they spoke to me — it’s not like I was surprised when the team was announced. So that’s a good thing, that the captain, selector, and coach communicated with me about their thought process,” Jadeja said during the press conference.
In his remarks, Jadeja reiterated his readiness to perform when called upon, emphasizing the goal of winning the World Cup, particularly after falling short in the last edition where India lost to Australia by six wickets in the final.
“Whenever the next opportunity comes, I’ll try to continue doing what I’ve been doing all these years. Regarding the major tournament — the World Cup — if I get a chance, there are several ODIs before that. If I perform well in those, it would be beneficial for Indian cricket. Winning the World Cup is everyone’s dream. Last time in the 50-over World Cup, we came up short, so this time, if possible, we’ll try to finish what was left incomplete,” Jadeja stated.
