Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu has sparked speculation about a return to active politics following his recent meeting with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi. Sidhu shared a photo of the encounter on social media on Friday, stating, “Met my mentor, lighthouse and guiding angel…. Just grateful to her and Bhai for standing by in rough and tough times.”
After completing a one-year imprisonment related to a 1988 road rage death case, Sidhu remained out of active political affairs upon his release from Patiala jail in 2023.
Previously, Sidhu held significant roles within the Congress party, serving as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and as the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs under the Amarinder Singh-led government.
His wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, continues to be active in the Amritsar East assembly segment, a seat that the couple has represented in the past.
Sidhu began his political career with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2004, winning the general election from Amritsar and maintaining that position until 2014. In 2016, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab but resigned later that year, subsequently leaving the BJP. Sidhu joined the Congress in 2017, successfully being elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Amritsar East. However, he faced defeat in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections for the same constituency.
