Josh’s Apocalyptic Parody: The Next Frontier in AI Filmmaking

The filmmaker’s experience with AI software revealed significant challenges in achieving accuracy and coherence. In one instance, a rendering of Tiggy appeared unusually muscular, while another showed his back with an uncharacteristically dry texture. When instructed to give the back of Tiggy’s head a “frog-like skin,” the software instead overlaid an entire frog’s face. The AI software also appeared reluctant to depict Tiggy without clothing, leading to an error message when the director requested a “short shirtless alien,” likely due to built-in safety mechanisms against such content.

The interactions with AI reflect a broader narrative tendency that positions AI technology as either a major threat or overstated hype. The filmmaker’s process was more whimsical and less dramatic, highlighting the trial-and-error nature of working with AI. While sipping morning iced coffee and sporting a casual appearance, he navigated the peculiarities of the software, which frequently misinterpreted commands or produced unexpected results. With persistence, he managed to produce eight minutes of scripted original television.

This production represented the latest episode in the sci-fi universe created under the name Neural Viz, which originated in 2024 with the mockumentary web series Unanswered Oddities. This series presents a future where Earth is home to glurons, creatures that engage in speculative discussions similar to those seen in Ancient Aliens, exploring various facets of human civilization—often mispronouncing terms like “hooman.” Initially conceived as a humorous, standalone concept, the universe quickly began to expand.

Neural Viz produced additional episodes across different series within the same gluron television network, known as Monovision. This expansion included a documentary police drama and a UFC-style show centered on bug fighting. The anthology further evolved to include podcasts and street interviews, with developing storylines that featured romantic relationships, religious cults, and grainy archival footage hinting at the true events surrounding humanity’s extinction. In a short time, the filmmaker constructed a rich and intricate world, complete with its own language, characters, and lore, all generated through AI technology.
