Supreme Court Petition Filed by Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Over NSA Detention

Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has filed a petition with the Supreme Court of India seeking her husband’s release from detention under the National Security Act (NSA). Wangchuk was arrested on September 26, 2025, following protests in Ladakh that called for statehood and the implementation of the Sixth Schedule provisions. He is currently being held in Jodhpur jail, Rajasthan.

In a message on X, formerly Twitter, Angmo expressed her concerns regarding her husband’s situation. “I have sought relief from the Supreme Court of India through a Habeas Corpus petition against Wangchuk’s detention. It is one week today. Still, I have no information about Sonam Wangchuk’s health, the condition he is in, nor the grounds for his detention,” she stated.

Angmo’s plea, submitted through her lawyer Sarvam Ritam Khare, challenges the legality of Wangchuk’s detention, arguing that the application of the NSA in this case was unjustified. She also mentioned that she has not received a copy of the detention order, which she claims contradicts legal protocols.

Further expressing her frustration, Angmo indicated she has had no communication with her husband since his arrest. Earlier, she sought intervention from President Droupadi Murmu in a three-page letter, alleging a “witch-hunt” against Wangchuk for his advocacy on behalf of the people over the past four years. In the letter, she noted her complete lack of information regarding his condition.

Gitanjali Angmo, who serves as the CEO of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL), criticized the Union government for its response to the protests and alleged police violence following the demonstrations on September 24 in the Union Territory. The protests became violent, resulting in four fatalities and numerous injuries.

Wangchuk’s arrest under the NSA occurred shortly after these incidents, amid heightened tensions surrounding long-standing demands for greater legislative autonomy in Ladakh.
