Chandrashekhar Azad Detained at Home While Attempting to Reach Bareilly for ‘I Love Muhammad’ Event

Chandrashekhar Azad, the MP from Nagina and chief of the Bhim Army, was placed under house arrest in Saharanpur while attempting to meet families impacted by the police response to the ‘I Love Mohammad’ campaign and a recent police lathi charge in Bareilly. Azad questioned, “If everything is well, why am I being stopped?” as he intended to visit Bareilly to meet the victims, but police halted his plans citing security concerns.

On Twitter, he expressed confusion over the authorities’ actions, questioning if no injustice had occurred to Muslims in Bareilly, why the government would obstruct his visit. He asserted that if the “dictators” intended to keep them under surveillance, they would persist in seeking justice for the Bahujan community.

The Bhim Army issued a statement condemning attempts to silence victims and impede their fight for rights, stating, “We will continue to fight for justice and always stand with society.” Azad demanded an immediate end to the arrest and harassment of innocent Muslims, calling for the cessation of arbitrary police raids and demolitions, urging the withdrawal of what he termed false cases against individuals.

He alleged that incidents such as the jailing of a youth in Shamli for writing ‘I Love Mohammad’ on his chest and the police’s violent response in Bareilly on September 26 were part of a deliberate campaign to defame a particular religion for political gain. He emphasized that the Muslim community had only sought to submit a peaceful memorandum, yet they were denied permission even to pray, leading to the police action that resulted in injuries among innocents.

Azad accused authorities of collectively punishing Muslims with unfounded allegations of violence, despite evidence indicating that the stone-pelting from rooftops was orchestrated as part of a “well-thought-out conspiracy.” He described how innocent Muslims were being subjected to severe police brutality, public humiliation, and destruction of their homes, while women, children, imams, and muezzins were also facing harassment.

He labeled these actions a violation of constitutional rights, specifically referencing Articles 25 to 28, which guarantee freedom of religion, and reiterated his intention to visit Bareilly to meet affected families. This incident follows the house arrest of Saharanpur MP Imran Masood and former Amroha MP Kunwar Danish Ali, who were also detained to prevent them from visiting the region impacted by protests.
