Benchmark indices held onto their gains in afternoon trading on Monday, with the Sensex reaching 80,563.03, up 136.57 points or 0.17% from the previous close of 80,426.46 as of 13:30 IST. The Nifty was at 24,705.70, an increase of 51.00 points or 0.21% from Friday’s close of 24,654.70.

The indices opened higher, with the Sensex beginning at 80,588.77 and the Nifty at 24,728.55, as markets sought to build on the morning’s recovery following a sell-off in the previous week. However, the gains moderated throughout the session, reflecting cautious sentiment influenced by ongoing global headwinds and significant outflows from foreign institutional investors.

Market breadth on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was even, with 1,941 stocks advancing against 1,980 decliners, while 210 remained unchanged out of a total of 4,131 stocks traded. A total of 115 stocks reached 52-week highs, and 116 hit 52-week lows, while 204 stocks hit their upper circuit limits and 182 reached their lower circuit limits.

IndusInd Bank led the Nifty gainers, rising 2.27% to ₹728.90, followed by Wipro, which increased by 1.96% to ₹240.37. Eternal added 1.84% to ₹326.90, Bharat Electronics rose by 1.79% to ₹403.00, and Hindalco advanced 1.74% to ₹756.80.

On the downside, Axis Bank was the biggest loser, dropping by 2.05% to ₹1,130.40. Maruti Suzuki fell 1.08% to ₹16,110.00, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories decreased by 1.03% to ₹1,240.20, HDFC Life shed 0.81% to ₹758.20, and Tech Mahindra slipped by 0.77% to ₹1,396.80.

The Nifty Next 50 outperformed the benchmark, gaining 457.70 points or 0.68% to reach 67,589.10, while the Nifty Midcap 100 rose by 255.30 points or 0.45% to 56,694.05. The Nifty Bank index added 53.15 points or 0.10% to 54,569.90, and the Nifty Financial Services index increased marginally by 12.60 points or 0.05% to 26,056.55.

Despite the recovery, foreign institutional investors withdrew ₹5,687 crore on Friday and ₹30,143 crore in September so far. Domestic institutional investors, however, managed to absorb this selling pressure, reporting inflows of ₹5,843 crore.
