Tamil Nadu Stampede: CM MK Stalin Visits Karur After Tragedy

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited Karur early Sunday morning to express condolences to the families affected by a tragic stampede during a campaign event for Thamizhaga Vazhikatti Kaala Aandavar (TVK) leader and actor Vijay. The incident occurred approximately 400 km from Chennai, resulting in significant casualties.

Speaking to the press, CM Stalin conveyed his deep sorrow over the event, stating, “I am standing here with deep sorrow. I am unable to describe the horrific accident that took place in Karur.” The incident reportedly occurred around 7:30 PM while Vijay was addressing a large audience that had gathered throughout the day. The stampede was triggered as several attendees began to collapse, including women and children.

As of the latest reports, 39 individuals have lost their lives, a number unprecedented in a political gathering within the state. Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that the deceased count includes 10 children, 17 women, and 12 men, while more than 80 others were hospitalized. Currently, 51 people are reported to be undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.

In response to the tragedy, Stalin announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured. He emphasized that an inquiry commission would be established, headed by a retired High Court judge, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede. Retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan has been appointed to lead this commission.

During his visit to the Government Medical College and Hospital, CM Stalin met with victims and paid tribute to those who lost their lives. Earlier, he directed officials to ensure immediate medical assistance for anyone who fainted during the event.

The Union Home Ministry has requested a detailed report from the Tamil Nadu government regarding the stampede. Home Minister Amit Shah communicated with Governor RN Ravi and CM Stalin to assess the situation and assured that central assistance would be provided.

In a statement reflecting on the tragic event, Vijay expressed profound grief, stating, “My heart is shattered; I am engulfed in unbearable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital.”

Prominent leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, have also expressed their condolences regarding the loss of life in this unfortunate incident.
