US Official Hints at Upcoming Modi-Trump Meeting: A ‘Very Positive’ Relationship

A US official has confirmed that a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump is expected to occur, according to ANI. However, specific details regarding this potential meeting were not disclosed. “I’m sure you’ll see the two meet. They have a very, very positive relationship,” the official said.

Despite existing trade and visa tensions, Trump has referred to Modi as “a good friend” and has characterized the relationship with India as “very special.” Recently, Trump also reached out to Modi on the occasion of his 75th birthday, expressing appreciation for his leadership. “Just had a wonderful phone call with my friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I wished him a very Happy Birthday! He is doing a tremendous job,” Trump stated, also thanking Modi for India’s support in addressing the situation between Russia and Ukraine.

Earlier this week, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where both leaders emphasized the need for continued engagement to advance key issues. Modi and Trump last met in February for discussions focused on trade, energy, and defense cooperation.

Tensions between the US and India have escalated due to Trump’s implementation of 50% tariffs on Indian imports, which includes a 25% levy related to Russian oil, as well as a new H-1B visa fee of $100,000 that could affect Indian IT professionals and startups. Despite these challenges, both nations continue to explore trade negotiations ahead of an impending deadline.
