The family of 23-year-old MBA student Mohammad Farhat, discovered deceased in his hostel room at IIM Udaipur on September 7, has formally requested an investigation by the CBI or CBCID. In a letter addressed to Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, they unequivocally refuted the suicide narrative, asserting their belief that their son was murdered and that influential individuals are attempting to suppress the truth.

In the letter, Mohammad Ishaq, Farhat’s father and a resident of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, recounted the events that led him to doubt the suicide theory. “Upon entering his sealed hostel room, I observed a rope tied to the ceiling fan, a wet towel on his bed, fresh adhesive on the sealed door, his laptop still on, an unfinished cup of tea, and his possessions neatly organized. None of this indicates a suicide,” Ishaq stated in the correspondence.

Ishaq also highlighted what he perceives as mishandling of the case, asserting, “When I sought explanations from the administration, no official provided a satisfactory response. Instead, I was pressured to accept that my son died by suicide. I firmly believe my son has been murdered, and the truth is being concealed.”

He further claimed there were inconsistencies in the post-mortem findings, alleging, “After the report was released, when the body was repositioned, I observed deep injury marks on his back. Despite my persistent requests, the police overlooked this and did not include it in their report.”

Describing the situation as a cover-up, Ishaq urged the Chief Minister to initiate a CBI or CBCID investigation, asserting that “powerful people are involved in my son’s murder and the facts are being hidden.” He requested the assurance that the police would provide full cooperation in any ensuing investigation.

Previously, the Rajasthan Human Rights Commission has sought a comprehensive report from the state government, Udaipur district administration, and IIM authorities regarding Farhat’s death. Despite these inquiries, the family remains convinced that only a central agency can ensure justice. “We will not accept silence,” Ishaq concluded in his letter, and he has attached photographs along with the post-mortem report as supporting evidence.

The official post-mortem report is still pending.
