Massive Pro-Palestinian Protests and Strikes Sweep Across Italy

Cities across Italy have witnessed pro-Palestinian protests, strikes, and blockades, responding to calls from trade unions urging the public to denounce the violence in Gaza and advocate for diplomatic and economic sanctions against Israel. These demonstrations coincided with France and several other nations’ intentions to recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly, following similar recognition by the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Despite this regional momentum, Italy maintains a cautious stance and will not recognize a Palestinian state at this time. In Rome, hundreds of secondary school students gathered outside Termini railway station, displaying Palestinian flags and chanting “Free Palestine!” Protests also occurred in Milan, Turin, Florence, Naples, Bari, and Palermo, while dock workers in Genoa and Livorno obstructed port operations. The Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, closely aligned with U.S. foreign policy, has expressed concerns regarding the Israeli offensive yet remains hesitant to endorse the European Union’s proposed trade sanctions on Israel.
