New Delhi: Renowned Bollywood actor Raj Kumar is celebrated for his distinctive style and impactful performances. His legacy endures through iconic films such as “Pakeezah,” “Saudagar,” “Tiranga,” and “Neel Kamal.” Fans fondly remember his unique delivery of “Jaani…” while emphasizing his dialogues, a trademark gesture that has become synonymous with the late actor.

Apart from his signature style, Raj Kumar was known for his sharp wit and lively conversation. Numerous anecdotes about his humorous interactions circulate among industry insiders. One notable account involves producer-director Ramanand Sagar, which remains lesser-known.

Raj Kumar’s Comment on a Film Role

In 1967, Ramanand Sagar sought to cast Raj Kumar in his film “Aankhen.” After presenting the film’s storyline, Raj Kumar expressed his disinterest. He reportedly called his pet dog to the meeting, humorously inquiring, “Will you do this film?” He then turned to Sagar and quipped, “Ye role mera kutta bhi nahi karega” (Look, even my dog does not want to take up this role). Sagar was reportedly taken aback by Raj Kumar’s bluntness and left the meeting visibly upset.

Consequently, the two did not communicate for some time, and it is noteworthy that they never collaborated professionally in the future.

Dharmendra’s Opportunity

Subsequently, Dharmendra was cast in the lead role of “Aankhen,” which premiered in 1968 and became a major success. The film is considered one of the highlights of Dharmendra’s career. Produced with a budget of approximately Rs 85 lakhs, it grossed around Rs 6 crores.

Written and directed by Ramanand Sagar, the film featured a talented ensemble cast, including Mala Sinha, Dharmendra, Kumkum, Sujit Kumar, Mehmood, Lalita Pawar, and Parduman Randhawa in significant roles.
