Relentless monsoon rains have transformed the semi-arid plains of eastern Rajasthan into a disaster zone, overwhelming fragile soils and prompting widespread flooding and erosion across more than 30 villages. The heavy downpours, attributed to monsoon depressions in the Bay of Bengal, have had devastating effects.

In Jadawata village, floodwaters have decimated farmland, creating deep erosion channels and leaving the soil barren. Once-productive fields are now void of topsoil, and the area has seen two houses collapse while others teeter on unstable ground. This catastrophic flooding has halted farming activities, jeopardizing local food security and causing a complete loss for the 2025 Kharif crop season.

Meanwhile, in Surwal, the overflow of the Surwal Dam resulted in waist-deep floodwaters inundating homes. Neighborhoods were submerged, and residents have resorted to sleeping on rooftops and cooking on elevated platforms while storing firewood under plastic sheets. The flooding has destroyed entire fields, eliminating this year’s harvest prospects.

Across the Sawai Madhopur district, more than 100,000 people have been displaced due to the floods. Rescue efforts are underway with the participation of the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams conducting boat rescues. Community volunteers have been actively operating kitchens to feed those affected. However, relief supplies are slow to reach Jadawata, hindered by washed-out roads and collapsed bridges.

Experts have raised concerns that climate change is exacerbating extreme weather events in India, increasing the frequency of sudden and destructive rains. Warmer air holds more moisture, leading to greater rainfall variability and sharp swings between drought and flooding, which impact the already fragile soils of eastern Rajasthan.

Despite the devastation, communities are showcasing resilience. Residents are working together, with women cooking in shared kitchens, youth marking danger zones, and elders keeping vigilant during the night. The dual impacts of land loss in Jadawata and flooding in Surwal underscore the scale of the August 2025 Rajasthan floods while highlighting the determination of communities to reconstruct and endure.
