Mexico’s Historic Independence Day Celebrated by First Female President

President Claudia Sheinbaum has made history as the first woman to lead Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations in 215 years, delivering a strong message against foreign intervention amid increasing diplomatic pressure from the United States. During the traditional “grito” ceremony from the National Palace balcony in Mexico City, Sheinbaum rang the bell that symbolizes the call to arms from Mexico’s independence struggle against Spain. On September 16, she emphasized, “No foreign power makes decisions for us,” addressing her cabinet and thousands of soldiers during Tuesday’s military parade. Although she did not specify any nation, her remarks were notable given the US government’s heightened demands for Mexico to combat drug cartels and improve border security. The Trump administration had previously proposed deploying US troops against designated “terrorist” cartels, a suggestion Sheinbaum has repeatedly declined. Her administration has intensified actions against cartels, extraditing key figures to US authorities, while maintaining that these efforts are aligned with Mexico’s national interests rather than a response to foreign pressure.
