Pakistan Trains in Dubai Amid Boycott Calls, Future in Asia Cup Uncertain

The Pakistan cricket team aimed to project calm and composure ahead of their Asia Cup match against the UAE; however, concerns and uncertainty shadow their campaign. The situation intensified following a controversial handshake incident on Sunday, where Indian players chose not to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts in light of the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in 26 fatalities. This event has prompted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to react swiftly.

In what they perceive as a violation of ICC protocols, the PCB requested the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) promptly denied this appeal. Notably, the rejection letter was signed by ICC General Manager Waseem Khan, a former CEO of the PCB—a detail that did not escape scrutiny.

While PCB officials awaited instructions from Islamabad regarding their next steps, they pursued the appointment of Richie Richardson as the match referee for the upcoming game, a decision seen as a potential face-saver for PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, who also holds the position of Pakistan’s interior minister.

Media speculation in Pakistan suggested that Naqvi’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was primarily concerned with domestic issues rather than cricket. Nevertheless, the future of Pakistan’s participation in the Asia Cup remains uncertain. According to Cricbuzz, discussions between the two did touch on cricket and the handshake episode, with a decision regarding participation anticipated by early tomorrow. Withdrawal from the tournament could potentially result in a financial loss of approximately $16 million for the board.

Amid these tensions, the team did not attend their pre-match press conference, fueling rumors of a possible boycott. However, they did participate in training, albeit in a subdued manner. Their warm-up session, characterized by a light and less rigorous approach, contrasted sharply with India’s high-intensity drills, where players such as Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma underwent demanding fitness routines under their fitness coach, Adrian Le Roux.
