Evhen Ihnatov, a 16-year-old from Mykolaiv, shared his harrowing experiences during the Russian occupation of Kherson, Ukraine. At just 13, he lost his mother, Tamara, who died in a tragic incident involving a misdirected Ukrainian missile. Ihnatov’s brother was forcibly taken to Russia on the same day. He recounted the severe mistreatment of Ukrainians under Russian control, including brutal assaults, abductions, and forced labor. Despite the imposition of a pro-Russian curriculum in schools, many students exhibited resistance, while the local community remained largely pro-Ukrainian. After the withdrawal of Russian forces from Kherson in late 2022, Ihnatov and his family relocated to Mykolaiv, seeking safety and stability amidst ongoing hostilities.
