Iran is endeavoring to pass a resolution at the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) aimed at prohibiting attacks on nuclear installations. This initiative comes in the wake of airstrikes by the United States and Israel during a recent conflict. Iranian officials, currently attending the 69th General Conference in Vienna, have expressed intent to present a resolution to safeguard nuclear facilities, although they have not disclosed its specific language. Following his arrival in Austria, Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, criticized the IAEA for its perceived double standards in addressing security breaches related to nuclear facilities. Additionally, Iran’s deputy nuclear chief indicated that the U.S. is exerting pressure on member states to obstruct the resolution and has threatened to withdraw financial support from the IAEA. Nonetheless, Iran maintains that historical precedents exist for such resolutions, highlighting past UN Security Council actions that condemned attacks on nuclear facilities.
