The government of Maharashtra has embarked on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its administrative functions, with support from Microsoft and the Gates Foundation. This partnership aims to position the state as a national exemplar in digital governance and the Right to Service. Recently, Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and a representative of the Gates Foundation, met with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Sahyadri State Guest House in Mumbai.

During their discussions, Gates and Fadnavis explored the incorporation of AI in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure to enhance efficiency and foster innovation. This collaboration is anticipated to propel Maharashtra’s initiatives in utilizing AI-powered solutions for governance, economic growth, and the delivery of public services. It also aligns with the state’s broader goals of digital transformation and sustainable development.

CM Fadnavis underscored Maharashtra’s ongoing development, citing significant projects in infrastructure, agriculture, and healthcare. He appealed to the Gates Foundation for collaboration in improving healthcare services in rural areas, where a lack of doctors poses a significant challenge.

The Chief Minister mentioned that AI is being embedded in healthcare and agriculture, with specific budget allocations for these areas. He provided an example from Pune district, where AI interventions have successfully doubled sugarcane production.

Addressing energy requirements, Fadnavis emphasized the state’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply for farmers. He also introduced Maharashtra’s ambitious Innovation City, a 300-acre technology hub in Navi Mumbai aimed at nurturing tech-driven advancements. In response, Gates pledged both financial and technical support for this initiative, reaffirming Microsoft and the Gates Foundation’s dedication to Maharashtra’s digital advancement.

A significant aspect of their dialogue focused on women’s empowerment and self-employment. Fadnavis reiterated his government’s intention to create 2.5 million ‘Lakhpati Didis,’ enabling women to attain financial independence. He also discussed the Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana, which provides monthly support of ₹1,500 to underprivileged women.

Gates confirmed that Microsoft and the Gates Foundation would actively engage with these initiatives, expressing their commitment to digitizing women’s financial transactions and promoting economic self-sufficiency.
