On the eve of World Oral Health Day (March 20), the FDI World Dental Federation is emphasizing the importance of oral health in maintaining overall well-being. The campaign, titled ‘A happy mouth is a happy mind’, aims to raise awareness about the relationship between oral and mental health, symbolized by the mascot ‘Toothie’ the beaver.

According to the World Health Organization, almost 3.5 billion people worldwide are affected by oral diseases. These conditions not only cause physical discomfort but can also lead to social isolation and diminished self-confidence. Additionally, oral health issues are often interconnected with other serious health problems.

Preventing and treating oral diseases can be costly, and unfortunately, these services are not typically covered under national universal health coverage plans. Many low- and middle-income countries lack the necessary resources to address oral health conditions effectively.

The root causes of oral diseases are often linked to lifestyle choices such as excessive sugar consumption, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and poor hygiene practices. These risk factors are similar to those associated with other non-communicable diseases.

In light of these challenges, it is crucial to prioritize oral health as an integral part of overall health and well-being. By raising awareness and advocating for access to quality oral health services, we can work towards ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to maintain a healthy and happy smile.
