A new clinical trial map is now available on the public website of the Clinical Trials Information System (CTIS), as announced by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

The purpose of this map is to make it easier for patients and healthcare professionals to access comprehensive and up-to-date information about clinical trials being conducted in their region. By doing so, it aims to improve access to clinical research within the European Union (EU).

By utilizing the map, users can easily search for ongoing trials based on their geographical location and medical condition. The search function is user-friendly, supporting queries in everyday language and providing autocorrect suggestions for spelling errors. The search results include contact information for investigators, allowing the public to inquire directly about potential enrollment in a specific trial. Currently available in English, future releases will include additional EU languages.

This initiative is part of the Accelerating Clinical Trials in the European Union (ACT EU) work plan for 2025-26, which aims to create a simple and patient-friendly dashboard for CTIS to assist stakeholders, particularly patients, in finding relevant clinical trials in Europe. A recent public webinar hosted by EMA demonstrated the features of the map, with a recording available for future reference.

CTIS serves as a public database for healthcare professionals, patients, and citizens, ensuring a high level of transparency as outlined in the Clinical Trials Regulation. While the authorization and oversight of clinical trials fall under the responsibility of EU/EEA member states, EMA is tasked with maintaining CTIS, while the European Commission oversees the implementation of the Clinical Trials Regulation.
