I Tried Grindr’s AI Assistant: A Peek into the Future of Dating

Arison believes that conversations within the app provide a more genuine insight into users than the information they fill out in their profiles. He argues that the future of effective recommendations will hinge on this conversational data. “What you state in your profile is one thing,” he notes. “But what you express in your messages is quite another—how authentic that might be.” On platforms like Grindr, where discussions often involve explicit, personal details, some users may feel uneasy about AI models analyzing their private messages for insights, leading them to avoid such features.

One of the most beneficial AI functionalities for highly active Grindr users willing to let their data be utilized by AI could be chat summaries that recap recent exchanges, offering conversation starters to keep dialogues flowing. “It’s predominantly about reminding you of the type of connection you may have had with a user, along with potential topics worth revisiting,” explains A. J. Balance, Grindr’s chief product officer.

Additionally, the model can identify and highlight profiles of users deemed most compatible. For instance, if you have matched with someone and exchanged messages but haven’t advanced further, Grindr’s AI can summarize aspects of that conversation and, based on the data it has gathered about both users, showcase those profiles in an “A-List,” suggesting ways to reignite the connection, thereby enhancing the opportunities you’ve initiated.

“This ‘A-List’ feature actually explores your messages with individuals you’ve interacted with, extracting those where you’ve had meaningful exchanges,” Balance elaborates. “It uses that summary to remind you of the reasons it might be beneficial to resume the conversation.”

Slow Roll

As a newcomer to the LGBTQ+ dating scene, my initial experiences on Grindr felt both liberating and constraining. It was the first time I encountered overt racism in the form of statements like “No fats. No fems. No Asians,” plastered across numerous profiles. Despite being at my peak fitness, there always seemed to be a headless torso more toned than mine nearby, ready to critique my body. Based on prior encounters, AI features that could recognize addiction tendencies to the app and promote healthier habits and boundaries would be a welcome enhancement.

While Grindr’s other AI-oriented tools are slated for earlier releases throughout the year, the app’s generative AI assistant is not expected to fully launch until 2027. Arison is cautious about hurrying a comprehensive release to Grindr’s vast global user base. “These are also costly products to implement,” he mentions. “Therefore, we want to be judicious about that as well.” Advancements in generative AI, such as DeepSeek’s R1 model, may eventually lower the operational costs significantly.

Will he successfully navigate the introduction of these experimental and occasionally contentious AI tools in a bid to create a more inclusive platform for users seeking both long-term relationships and LGBTQ+ travel guidance, in addition to casual encounters? For the present, Arison remains optimistic, albeit prudent. “We don’t anticipate all these features to gain traction,” he states. “Some will succeed, while others might not.”
