NEW DELHI: A specialized CBI court documented the testimony of a senior scientific assistant on Tuesday who collected a voice sample from former minister of overseas Indian affairs, Jagdish Tytler, at CFSL New Delhi in April 2023. An audio recording featuring Tytler’s voice sample was also presented in court.

Tytler is currently on trial concerning the murder of Sikhs near Gurudwara Pul Bangash on November 1, 1984. CBI judge Jitendra Singh documented the evidence provided by the prosecution witness, Arun Kumar Gupta, who took Tytler’s voice sample at CFSL, New Delhi on April 11, 2023. This voice sample was collected as part of the evidence gathered by the CBI during its investigation. He is facing charges related to the killings of Sikhs on the specified date near Gurudwara Pul Bangash.

The evidence was recorded by CBI public prosecutor Amit Jindal, while defense attorneys Anil Kumar Sharma, Anuj Sharma, and Apoorv Sharma were present at the hearing. Advocate Surpreet Kaur, representing the victims of the riots, was also in attendance. The court has scheduled the matter for the cross-examination of the scientific officer on February 7.

The Rouse Avenue court is examining Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in relation to the Pul Bangash rioting and Sikh killings case. The court is recording prosecution evidence following the formal framing of charges against Tytler. During the hearing, Tytler was present.

This case revolves around the murders of three Sikhs near Gurudwara Pul Bangash on November 1, 1984. The first witness called to give evidence was Lakhvinder Kaur, whose husband, Badal Singh, was killed in the riots. The court had ordered the framing of charges under various sections of the IPC, including 143, 153A, 188, 149, 380, 436 IPC, as well as 302 and 109 IPC. Tytler was discharged under section 148 IPC.

This tragic event unfolded following the assassination of then-prime minister Indira Gandhi. The CBI presented a supplementary charge sheet against Tytler on May 20, 2023. On July 26, 2023, the court issued a summons to Tytler after acknowledging the supplementary charge sheet filed by the CBI against him.

The central bureau of investigation registered the instant case in November 2005 concerning an incident in which Gurudwara Pul Bangash at Azad Market, Bara Hindu Rao, Delhi was set ablaze by a mob, resulting in the deaths of three individuals—Sardar Thakur Singh, Badal Singh, and Gurcharan Singh—on November 1, 1984, near Gurudwara Pul Bangash.
